Tornado battles the elements to down Summit

BEND — Andrew Jones and Matt Maurer combined on a seven-hitter and North Medford broke through for a pair of runs in the eighth inning to defeat Summit, 4-2, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday.

The Black Tornado (2-0) pieced together the winning rally in the top half of the eighth when Maurer and Zack Earle each reached on an error. Hayden Wolfe followed with a single to score pinch-runner Mason Yeigh and Jordan Bostwick capped the inning with an RBI hit that plated Earle.

Wolfe also had an RBI single in the fourth inning that scored Maurer, who led off the inning with a double.

North Medford finished with 12 hits and played error-free ball for the second straight game.

The Black Tornado stranded 12 runners, including nine in scoring position, as it battled high winds and near-freezing temperatures.

"It was about 35 degrees and the wind was blowing straight in," said Tornado coach Brett Wolfe. "We hit the ball on the nose quite a few times, and it looked like we could break open the game a few times. But the ball just hung up there and (Summit) would go back and catch it on the warning track."

Hayden Wolfe went 3-for-5, while Bostwick was 3-for-4 and Jones went 2-for-4.

Maurer, in his first outing of the season, picked up the pitching win after striking out five in 31/3 innings of relief.
