Jantzer qualifies in three more events

ROGUE RIVER — Phoenix's Elliott Jantzer qualified for the Class 4A state track meet in three events Saturday during the Skyline Conference meet, bringing to four the total number of races in which he'll be involved.

Jantzer, who won the 3,000 meters on the opening day of the meet Friday, added berths in the 400, the 1,500 and on the 4x400 relay team.

Henley won they boys and girls team titles with 143 and 215 points, respectively.

The Phoenix boys were sixth with 66 points, and the Pirate girls were fourth with 73 points.

Five Phoenix boys and one girl advanced to state at Hayward Field Thursday through Saturday. The top two in each event moved on.

"This district meet was brutal in a number of ways," said Phoenix coach Hans Voskes. "With the heat, obviously, and the fact that the Skyline Conference is just loaded ... with boys and girls. If you look at the top marks in 4A, it's mostly Skyline Conference."

Janzter kicked off the day with a win in the 1,500. He clocked 4:01.84, one second faster than Rogue River sophomore Cole Watson.

With just 15 minutes to cool off, Janzter was able to pick up another qualifying mark as runner-up in the 400 (50.64) to Henley's Danny Staats.

Accompanied by Graham Thirkill, Conrad Hulen and Zach Hibbs, Jantzer wrapped up another spot at state as the anchor of the 4x400 relay team. Phoenix finished in second with a time of 3:29.08.

"When we gave Elliott the stick, and he was under 50 (seconds), it helped big time," said Voskes. "He took the baton as the anchor and just pushed it on in."

Pirates senior Zach Smith won the javelin with a throw of 160 feet, 10 inches.

Thirkill nabbed third place in the 400 (51.66), just missing the qualifying standard.

"This is a kid that was running 54s forever and just recently dropped his time like you wouldn't believe," said Voskes of Thirkill. "He scored some points for us and really came through in the mile relay. He has worked hard for so long, it's really nice to see."

Hidden Valley's Connor Kasler (1:58.22) edged Watson (1:58.33) in the 800. Both received a spot at state.

For the girls, North Valley junior Taylor Vandehey will compete in both hurdles events at state. She registered a time of 46.71 in the 300 intermediates and 16.46 in the 100 highs.

Anne Hagy will represent the Pirate girls. She grabbed second in the 1,500 behind Henley's Taylor Wallace. Hagy posted a time of 5:09.13.
