Pirates edge GP to claim own tourney

PHOENIX — Phoenix edged Grants Pass 32-30 in the championship match of the Pirates' own tournament on Friday.

Phoenix trailed by 13 points with four matches remaining against the Cavemen when freshman Elizar DeLuca earned a 6-5 victory over senior Dylan Fauver.

DeLuca scored on a takedown with 20 seconds remaining for the victory over the returning state qualifier at the Class 6A level.

"He beat an exceptional wrestler," Phoenix coach John Farmer said of DeLuca. "He led our charge to get us all fired up. For a freshman, that was pretty good.

"He (DeLuca) was relentless. He wasn't intimidated at all."

The Pirates, to stay in the match, needed a pin from Caleb Glanz at 112. He responded by getting a fall at the buzzer. John Florey also recorded a key 5-3 victory at heavyweight for Phoenix.

"It's a great way to start the season," said Farmer, whose team also defeated Eagle Point earlier in the day. "Eagle Point and Grants Pass are two top-notch programs. For us to hang with them and even come out on top, it's sparked the kids up a little bit that we can wrestle with these guys and get the job done."

Phoenix's Luke Amuchastegui went unbeaten at 160 and Farmer also credited Brett Carter, who wrestled up a weight at 189 and finished 3-1 on the day.
