Tornado wins Border tournament

DEL NORTE, Calif. — Three North Medford wrestlers pinned their way to championships, and the Black Tornado won the team title Saturday at the Battle of the Border tournament.

North Medford scored 270 points to runner-up Illinois Valley's 210.5. North Valley was seventh. There were 14 teams.

"I thought everyone wrestled very well," said Tornado coach Nolan Harris. "We had some young guys in the lineup."

Billy Coryell was one of them, placing second at 135 pounds, noted Harris. The coach also cited heavyweight Robert Ross, who wrestled well in a particularly tough division.

The three North wrestlers who won all their matches by fall were Ryan Mahoney at 152, Cory Haggans at 160 and Mark Dickison at 171.

"The kids came ready to wrestle," said Harris. "It's hard to single one out. The kids who pinned their way through, that's always exciting. We expected to do well. I think it's been awhile since we won a tournament at North Medford, and we were looking forward to this being the first one in awhile."
