Challengers win title

ROGUE RIVER — A new Sunset League rivalry may just have formed.

Cascade Christian and Rogue River — teams that will see each other two more times this season in league play — met for the Chieftain Holiday Classic championship on Saturday, with Cascade Christian edging host Rogue River in a 46-45 thriller.

The Challengers' Heather Case made one of two free throws with six seconds remaining and the game tied at 45-45, and the Chieftains never got a quality look at a potential game-winner as time expired.

"It was a great game," said Rogue River coach Dave Ehrhardt, whose team will play its first season in the Sunset League. "We were really pleased. Cascade Christian is an excellent team, and we are really happy we could hang with them."

Rogue River (3-2) did more than just hang with Cascade Christian (3-0). The Chieftains took a 44-41 lead on Alli Ehrhardt's 3-pointer with two minutes to play.

But 6-foot junior post Andi Vondra scored six of her game-high 18 points in the fourth, and Lindsey Blodgett connected on a 3-pointer with 1:30 to play to tie the game.

"She's calm," Cascade Christian coach Marvin Denman said of Blodgett. "She's a senior out there. That (3-pointer) helped us build a lot of confidence."

Rogue River had the chance to take the lead but missed a quick shot with 15 seconds to play before Case was fouled attempting a pass.

"We tried to play an up-tempo game," coach Ehrhardt said. "We got a little antsy with it. But with only two returners, we'll live with that. We couldn't ask for a better preseason game."

Alli Ehrhardt led Rogue River with 15 points and three assists. Shawna Turnham had eight points and six rebounds. The Chieftains played much of the second half without key players Sabrina Smith and Kelly Maxey, who were plagued by foul trouble.

Rogue River committed a season-low 10 turnovers.

Cascade Christian was hampered by sloppy play in the first half, but cleaned that up in the second. The Challengers also held a sizeable rebounding edge, Denman said, and tightened their defense late.

"We relied heavily on our team defense and taking away their scoring threats," Denman said. "We just focused on our defense all night long. That was the difference.

"It's going to be a good rivalry (with Rogue River), and I'm looking forward to it."
