Pirates win tourney title
PHOENIX — Phoenix defeated North Medford 44-15 in the championship dual of the eight-team Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday.
Pirates' junior Emmett Heltum, normally a 160-pounder, wrestled up to 171 and was undefeated in his four matches. He defeated North Medford's Jessie Hornbrook 9-2 in the championship match.
"Last year he got sick at districts so he's flying under everybody's radar," Phoenix coach John Farmer said. "He'll be a force to be reckoned with. He's been working really hard, and it's starting to show. He set the tone for us."
Phoenix's 152-pounder Luke Amuchastegui, a second-place finisher last year at state, was also unbeaten in the tournament to keep his undefeated record intact this season. He earned an 8-0 major decision over North Medford's Ryan Mahoney.
"You forget about him sometimes because he's always out there just doing his thing," Farmer said.
Farmer also said 112-pounder Kris Renfro (2-1), 130-pounder Jason Adams (3-1), and 189-pounder Brett Carder (2-1) also wrestled well.
"I liked the way we wrestled," Farmer said. "We went out aggressive."
Chris McFall (103), Emmon Ebert (140) Cory Haggans (160) and Robert Ross (285) earned victories for North Medford in the championship match.
