Boggess' shot lifts St. Mary's over UVC

Si Boggess' buzzer-beater rallied St. Mary's to a dramatic 42-40 home nonconference boys basketball victory over Umpqua Valley Christian on Saturday at St. Mary's High.

After a turnover by the Monarchs with four seconds remaining in the game, Boggess took an inbounds pass, dribbled upcourt and sank a running floater to give St. Mary's the win.

The Crusaders (5-6) trailed 17-2 to start the game partly due to Umpqua Valley's 6-4 senior post Ryan Graf scoring 10 of his game-high 22 points in the opening period.

St. Mary's trailed 26-13 at halftime, then cut the margin to 32-26 to begin the fourth quarter.

Timely defensive plays by Keenan Grant and Connor O'Boyle, and a pair of 3-pointers by Pete Watson, helped the Crusaders cut into the Monarchs' lead.

St. Mary's trailed by five points with 55 seconds remaining. A Logan Harper trey sliced the Crusaders' deficit to 40-38. After a missed free throw by the Monarchs, Lou Gambee canned a short jumper to tie the game at 40-all with 15 seconds left.

The Crusader defense forced UVC to throw the ball out of bounds on the next possession. Then Boggess raced upcourt with the ball and lifted a high arching shot in the key over Graf's reach for the game-winner.
