Freshman provides lift for Crusaders

MERRILL - With 5-foot-5 junior post Veronica Valdez sidelined with an ankle injury, the St. Mary's girls basketball team received the boost it needed from seldom-used freshman Anna Thorndike.

The 5-2 freshman guard played her most significant minutes this season and responded with four points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in eight minutes of action as sixth-ranked St. Mary's defeated Lost River 55-31 in the Southern Cascade League opener.

"Anna came in and gave us a spark," St. Mary's assistant coach Jolyn Hutsell said. "We were lacking a lot of intensity and we brought her in and she gave us a big lift."

Katie Bates led St. Mary's (8-4, 1-0 SCL) with 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Aubrie Street added nine points and Kelsey Gross had eight points and six rebounds.

But the Crusaders needed the energy from Thorndike after a sluggish and sloppy first half.

St. Mary's led 25-18 at the break and Thorndike, primarily a JV player, got all her minutes in the third quarter.

"She came in really confident and hustled," Hutsell said. "If she continues to play the way she played today, she will see more varsity minutes."

Added Hutsell: "The first half was definitely rough without Veronica. (Lost River) ran on us and we got beat down the floor. We were able to play our game in the second half."
