Mitch Singler sparks South in win

Mitch Singler had the hot hand early to help South Medford rebound after losing its Southwest Conference boys basketball opener Tuesday to South Eugene.

Mitch Singler and his cousin E.J. Singler each scored 22 points as the Panthers, ranked No. 3 in the Class 6A coaches' poll, pulled away in the second and third quarters to post a 73-56 SWC home victory against Roseburg Friday.

The Panthers, who led 21-20 after the opening period, outscored the Indians 34-19 over the next two quarters.

Mitch Singler had 11 points in the first quarter and was 3-for-4 from 3-point range in the opening half.

"He came out and shot well," said South Medford coach Dennis Murphy. "We moved the ball to get open looks. When they were created, we made open shots."

The Panthers (8-3, 1-1 SWC) were 14 of 24 from the field in the opening half and finished 27 of 52 (52 percent). South also posted a huge rebounding advantage, 38-9, and had 17 offensive boards.

Senior post E.J. Singler had a team-high 11 rebounds to go with six assists and two blocks.

For Roseburg (1-9, 0-2 SWC), junior wing Josh Malone had a team-high 18 points.

Austin Rowley had 17 points to lead Eagle Point (7-6, 0-2), while Tyrone Holmes snagged 16 rebounds.

PHOENIX 45, NORTH VALLEY 36 — At Phoenix, Phoenix overcame poor free-throw shooting to hold on for the Skyline Conference win.

Skyler Reagan had 14 points for the Pirates (8-5, 2-0 Skyline).

Phoenix was 7-for-17 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter — and 18-for-39 overall — but still managed to stave off North Valley (0-11, 0-2).

Morse was 7 of 8 from the field and didn't miss a free throw in eight attempts. Additionally, Morse had eight rebounds and three blocks.

Senior point guard Jarrod Hess provided five assists and three steals for the Challengers (10-2, 3-0 Sunset).
