Smith, Pirates knock out North Valley

MERLIN — Without one of its top players in starting point guard Kelsey George, Danielle Smith had some pretty big shoes to fill for the Phoenix girls basketball team Friday.

Smith, usually a wing, thrived as the Pirates' primary ball-handler, generating 14 points and five assists. She also made the play of the game, which cemented Phoenix's 46-40 Skyline Conference triumph over host North Valley.

With under three minutes to play, the Knights trimmed the Pirates' lead to 38-36 and had possession.

As the Knights were advancing the ball, Smith darted in for the steal and jetted the other way for the transition layin.

Smith also sank two late free throws to help ice the win.

Chelsea Passante had 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals.

Qiana Helm grabbed 10 rebounds and senior Kirstie Heath came off the bench to score 10 points for the Pirates.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 54, GLIDE 26 — Freshman guard Katie Aguilar sparked Cascade Christian's defensive pressure which allowed the Challengers to get out in transition and race to a 25-7 halftime lead.

Sophomore forward Aleena Cesaro scored 12 points to pace Cascade Christian (7-3, 3-0 Sunset). Andi Vondra added seven points and three steals, while Lindsey Blodgett contributed six points and three assists.
