St. Mary's outlasts Chiloquin

The sixth-ranked St. Mary's girls basketball team always expects a difficult challenge against Southern Cascade League foe Chiloquin.

The Crusaders (9-4, 2-0 SCL) got all they could handle once again on Saturday at St. Mary's High.

St. Mary's made 7 of 12 free throws in overtime after Chiloquin (10-3, 1-1 SCL) missed a potential game-winning free throw in regulation, and the Crusaders hung on for the 58-51 victory.

"We just kept fighting," St. Mary's coach Tim Pflug said. "It's always a great game with Chiloquin. Our mental toughness really helped tonight."

Domonique Valdez made two free throws with seven seconds remaining to give St. Mary's a one-point lead, but the Crusaders were whistled for a foul near halfcourt in an attempted trap with three seconds left.
