Phoenix takes down Illinois Valley

PHOENIX — The third-ranked Phoenix wrestling team defeated No. 2-ranked Illinois Valley 48-31 in a battle of Skyline Conference heavyweights on Wednesday.

Freshman Riley Dodd earned a key pin at 119 pounds and Justin Adams (130), Ryan Tourville (135), Luke Amuchastegui (152), Emmet Hettum (160) and Alex Machado (189) also had pins.

"We beat them, but they weren't at full strength," Phoenix coach John Farmer said. "They left a kid or two behind. Still, we came out and wrestled tough. It's still good to knock them off. They've beaten us up a couple of years. It's nice to get one."

Farmer said the "biggest match of the night" was between Illinois Valley's Sam Winter, a returning state champion, and Phoenix freshman Eliazer Deluca at 140. Deluca trailed Winter by just three points before attempting a risky move that backfired late in the match. Winter won 8-0.

"It was a real good match," Farmer said. "He tried to go for the win. He didn't get it, but he wasn't satisfied with a close match. I like that attitude."

Machado wrestled for the first time at 189 and pined Jarred Houston in 47 seconds while Tourville, the other senior captain along with Machado, pinned Matt Coultas in 2:28.

Dodd pinned Tyler Delaney in 4:48.

"He was very tough and relentless," Farmer said of Dodd. "It would have been a much closer match if he would not have done that."

The always steady Amuchastegui pinned Matt Nolan in 2:52 and Hettum took down Gavin Hart in 1:49. Adams, a sophomore, continued his steady improvement by pinning Luke Harris in 1:07.

"He's been getting better and better," Farmer said. "He's going to be someone to deal with at the end of the season."

Jesse Orndoff (103), Chris Culver (112) and Lance Tausaga (215) had pins for Illinois Valley.

Both teams will compete in Eureka, Calif. tournament this weekend.
