Valdez sisters lead St. Mary's

BONANZA — St. Mary's got its fast-break offense in gear and romped to an 84-43 Southern Cascade League girls basketball victory against Bonanza Thursday.

The sixth-ranked Crusaders (10-4, 3-0 SCL) registered their sixth straight victory and tied a season-high scoring total. St. Mary's also put up 84 points against Riddle on Dec. 3.

"We ran a lot tonight and had a lot of transition points," said St. Mary's assistant coach Jolyn Hutsell. "We have a quick bunch. We did a good job outletting the ball."

The Valdez sisters, junior forward Veronica and sophomore point guard Domonique, ignited the Crusaders' transition attack.

Veronica Valdez tallied 21 points, six rebounds and four assists.

"Not only is she scoring points," said Hutsell, "but she had a bunch of assists. She works hard and battles to get great position."

Domonique Valdez scored 12 points to go with four rebounds, four steals and two assists.

"She is playing with a lot of confidence," said Hutsell. "She is attacking the basket. She was really active."

Sophomore Kylee Adderson added 13 points and six rebounds — five offensive — while junior post Katie Bates grabbed nine rebounds and had four blocks for the Crusaders.

St. Mary's shot 52 percent from the field (33-for-64) and had 17 steals.

"This was probably our best whole game of the year," said Hutsell. "We were patient and didn't force a lot of shots. The girls played smart."

COMETS PREVAIL — At Central Point, Crater fared well in an unconventional setting against wrestlers from Ashland and Cascade Christian.

With the Grizzlies down to only four wrestlers due to illness and injury, Cascade Christian wrestlers filled in some spots to allow a reasonably full night of wrestling.

Crater's Kenny Fahndrich scored a 7-6 overtime decision over Ashland's Issa Shahin in one of the marquee matchups at 171. Fahndrich led 5-1 before Shahin rallied in the third period to send the match to overtime. In the extra session, Fahndrich shot for a double and got his head stuck between Shahin's legs, and when the Comet attempted to elevate Shahin was called for an illegal move when he scissored Fahndrich's head with his legs.

Crater freshman Gerald Jakabowsky also earned an impressive 12-3 major decision over Cascade Christian's Garron Pobuda at 171, while first-year Comet Luciano Duran won by fall over the Challengers' Daniel Kilan in 46 seconds at 215.
