Newcomb propels Panthers

Brittney Newcomb produced when South Medford needed it most against Grants Pass Friday night.

The Panther senior guard poured in 30 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, as South Medford picked up its third consecutive Southwest Conference girls basketball win with a 54-49 home victory over the Cavers.

"(Newcomb) took over the game in the fourth quarter," South Medford coach Tom Cole said. "Anytime Grants Pass would surge, she would answer. She made some huge 3s when the game was in balance. And at the end she was perfect from the line."

Newcomb's performance was particularly timely because senior backcourt mate Sheena Barkley was knocked out of the game with a hard hit to the face in the final period.

Newcomb had five 3-pointers in the contest and made both ends of two critical 1-and-1's from the line in the final two minutes. Newcomb also had nine steals.

The Panthers (8-6, 4-1 SWC) trailed 23-22 at halftime.

"We struggled in the first half," said Cole. "We had no rhythm or continuity in the offense."

The Panthers received a major contribution off the bench from freshman post Tess Picknell, who scored seven points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go with six blocks.

"Tess is really improving," said Cole. "She made some big buckets and did a great job of rebounding."

Junior forward Heather Wonsyld led Grants Pass (7-5, 2-3 SWC) with 13 points.

"It was a gritty win," said Cole. "Grants Pass played tough to the end. It came down to a couple of possessions. We were fortunate."
