North falls to Sheldon

EUGENE — Following its disheartening loss to South Medford, the North Medford boys basketball team battled it out with Southwest Conference leader Sheldon on Friday.

Sheldon's Billy Pinz made two free throws to break a 59-all game with 3.7 seconds remaining, helping the Irish defend their home court in a thrilling 61-59 victory over the Black Tornado.

"It was painful, very painful," North Medford coach Scott Plankenhorn said. "We knew it was gonna be a dogfight coming in, and it was. We stopped rebounding the basketball a little and let them back in the game."

With 20 seconds left, the Black Tornado's Jordan Ellis drove to the basket and couldn't connect on his layin, but Matt Maurer was there for the offensive rebound and was fouled on the putback attempt.

Maurer made the second of two free throws and knotted the score 59-all with nine seconds to go.

Like Ellis, Pinz showed his aggressiveness and knifed into the lane, but was bumped on his way to the basket to set up his game-winning free throws.

Pinz finished with 31 points and made three 3-pointers. His early hot hand helped the Irish get out to a 32-28 halftime lead.

"He got it going," Plankenhorn said. "We didn't do a good job on him early, and he made some tough shots. You have to give it to him. We played good defense on him at times, and he made some good shots."

Ellis scored 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting, but with all of his aggressive drives to the hoop, never made it to the foul line. The senior was also 3-for-5 from downtown and had four assists.

Josh Pecktol added 13 points for the Black Tornado (10-2, 2-2 SWC). Maurer had seven points, eight rebounds and six assists.
