Ashland stays unbeaten in SOL

Casey Skolnik scored twice and also played defense as the undermanned Grizzlies remained undefeated with a 4-2 victory over North Medford in Southern Oregon League action at The RRRink Wednesday.

Ashland (8-0-0), which lost defenseman Tai White for the season with a broken collarbone Jan. 14, was down to just two regular defensemen after Keegan Healy was given a 10-minute misconduct penalty in the second period.

Sam Taylor and Skolnik scored 13 seconds apart early in the second to break a 1-all tie and give Ashland the margin it would need.

North Medford (3-4-0) closed to within 3-2 when Jared McClure's pass deflected off Ashland defenseman Matthias Dean's stick and into his own net with 5:08 left in the second period.

Ashland controlled the play throughout the third period and finished with a 33-15 advantage in shots.

Skolnik now has a league-leading 27 goals and 39 points in eight games.

Josh McLaughlin added an empty-net goal for Ashland with 21 seconds remaining.

Goalie Chase Myers made 29 saves to keep North Medford in the game.

CRATER 7, SOUTH MEDFORD 5 — Jake Randol recorded a hat trick as Crater continued its strong play after opening the season 0-3.

Daniel Gomez and Tate Stevens each scored twice for the Comets (3-3-1), who have won three of their last four and defeated South Medford for the second time.

Bryce Crawford had four assists for Crater.

Goaltender Lucas Paulsen made 36 saves, including stopping South Medford star Dane Irving on a penalty shot late in the third period to preserve a 6-5 lead.

Irving did score three times and had an assist for the Panthers (1-5-1), who got 31 saves from Brandon Andrews.

Samantha Andrews and Chris Hallen both scored for South.
