Phoenix upends Henley

PHOENIX — The last time the Phoenix girls faced Henley, the Hornets swarmed the boards and found success in their outside game.

On Tuesday night, the Pirates turned the tables as Chelsea Passante hit four 3-pointers and Phoenix pounced on the defensive glass to earn a 55-39 Skyline Conference victory at Phoenix High.

"We really spread the ball out and made them come out and guard us," said Pirates coach Randy Kirkland. "When we spread it out, we really made them chase and we did a good job of not turning the ball over."

In Henley's 48-41 victory earlier this season, Phoenix (15-4, 5-2 Skyline) gave up 22 points off offensive putbacks and allowed 21 points to the Hornets' sharp-shooting backcourt.

This time around the Pirates yielded only eight points on offensive rebounds and did not allow a 3-pointer in the contest.

But the real equalizer for the Pirates was Danielle Smith.

Smith poured in 19 points and had six assists and, along with Passante and Kelsey George, disrupted the Hornets' backcourt.

"(Smith) did a little bit of everything tonight and played great defense up front in our 2-3 zone," said Kirkland.

Passante generated 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. George had nine points.

Sophomore Kelsie Bradfield, in just her second start, contributed eight points and six boards.
