Singler vaults Panthers

E.J. Singler scored a season-high 29 points, including 20 in the second half, as South Medford pulled away from visiting Grants Pass, 60-54, in Southwest Conference boys basketball Tuesday.

Singler was 7-for-8 from the field and 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the second half. The senior also had seven rebounds.

"We got him the ball in spots where he was very comfortable," said coach Dennis Murphy. "He was taking good shots and knocking them down."

Singler's monster second half was a big boost, but the Panthers (13-5, 6-3 SWC) also took care of matters down the stretch by playing near mistake-free ball once they got the lead in the final period.

"We were a little more efficient toward the end of the game than they were, and then they had to foul and we made our foul shots," said Murphy.

The Panthers only committed six turnovers in contrast to 15 for the Cavemen.

"To Grants Pass' credit, they played very well in the fourth quarter," added Murphy. "You've gotta come ready to play, and we didn't really do that tonight. Grants Pass surely did. They made it a game."

The Panthers' Josh Havird added 11 points and five rebounds, and Miles Peterson had 10 points and five boards.

David Connelly scored 22 points — hitting four 3-pointers — for Grants Pass. Ronnie Fields added 16 points.
