Phoenix stays unbeaten in Skyline wrestling

MERLIN — Phoenix held out its top two wrestlers — Ryan Tourville and Luke Amuchastegui — but still put on an impressive performance against North Valley in a Skyline Conference road dual Thursday.

The Pirates, undefeated in league, recorded seven pins en route to a 69-6 victory.

"The kids went after it," said Phoenix coach John Farmer. "They were very aggressive."

Josh Warden (160) and Caleb Glanz (112) posted two of the better wins for the Pirates (16-1, 3-0 Skyline).

In a match that will probably determine the top seed at the district meet, Warden pinned Trevor Terry in 1:55.

"Josh was winning pretty good," said Farmer. "(Warden) had a takedown and turned him in the first minute."

Glanz registered a fall over Michael Morris 33 seconds into the second round.

"Caleb Glanz was hitting on every move we taught him," said Farmer. "It was good to see he had so much in his arsenal."

The Pirates received a boost from the return of Robby Blubaugh, who is coming off a back injury and was in the lineup for the first time this season. Blubaugh pinned James Martz in 5:44 at 135.

Backups Robert Amstutz (145) and Jason Gage (152) produced as replacements for Tourville and Amuchastegui.

"The people we put in there got the job done," said Farmer.
