Challengers come up short

MYRTLE POINT — Sixth-ranked Myrtle Point put Cascade Christian on its heels from the get-go to gain even more separation in Sunset League girls basketball.

The Bobcats limited the Challengers to only nine first-half points and withstood a fourth-quarter rally to earn a 45-37 home victory.

Sam Sanders had 17 points to pace Myrtle Point (19-3, 13-0 Sunset), which knocked Cascade Christian into a second-place tie with Gold Beach and Bandon at 9-4 in league.

"They were aggressive and we were just kinda watching them play a little bit before we started to get after it in the third and fourth quarters," said Challengers coach Marvin Denman, whose team dropped to 13-8 overall.

Myrtle Point opened a 26-9 lead by halftime and led by 20 points entering the fourth quarter before the Challengers mounted a rally with a 22-point quarter.

Aleena Cesaro had eight points and Kierstin Barlow added seven for the Challengers, who also got six points apiece from Amber Brown and Lindsey Blodgett.

ROGUE RIVER 52, COQUILLE 40 — At Rogue River, Rogue River clinched a spot in the Sunset League playoffs despite trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half.

Kelly Maxey led the charge for the Chieftains (9-14, 5-8 Sunset) with 25 points and Sabrina Smith added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Skyline Conference

PHOENIX 58, NORTH VALLEY 52 — At Merlin, Kelsey George was 15-of-16 shooting from the free-throw line and had 28 points to lift Phoenix to the Skyline Conference win.

Phoenix was 25-for-33 from the foul line, and Danielle Smith had 14 points. Chandler Tally had nine rebounds for Phoenix.

Nicole Goens scored 16 points for North Valley, which closed to within four with around three minutes to play, but the lead went back up to nine thanks in part to nine fourth-quarter free throws from George.

The Pirates (17-5, 7-3 Skyline) face Henley next Friday to decide the conference's No. 2 seed into the playoffs.

HIDDEN VALLEY 36, HENLEY 22 — At Murphy, Hidden Valley, behind 16 points and nine rebounds from Haley Fikso, clinched the Skyline title.

Jamie Richardson added eight points and six assists for the Mustangs (17-4, 9-0 Skyline), who have a three-game lead over Phoenix with three games to play. Hidden Valley won the first two meetings against the Pirates.

Cori Wallace led Henley (12-6, 6-4 Skyline) with eight points.

HOSANNA CHRISTIAN 60, BUTTE FALLS 23 — At Butte Falls, Hosanna Christian broke the game open in the third by outscoring the Loggers 28-6.

Butte Falls (5-18, 2-11 MVL) trailed 23-15 at halftime, but sophomore post Beth Sutfin injured an ankle as the half ended and didn't return. Sutfin had two points, four rebounds, four steals, one assist and one block before exiting.
