Chieftain girls upset CC; Morse ties mark

ROGUE RIVER — With only two seniors on the roster and four freshmen, Rogue River's girls basketball team has had a lot of trial-by-fire learning this season.

Those hard knocks, however, paid off in a big way for the Chieftains Monday night as Rogue River clinched the fifth and final spot in the Sunset League playoffs with a 44-41 upset of second-place Cascade Christian.

"That was a good one for us to get, a real good one," Rogue River coach Dave Ehrhardt said.

"We had to win our last two games to get into the playoffs and we did. We didn't back in, we really earned that fifth spot."

The Chieftains (10-14, 6-8 Sunset) opened an 11-4 lead through one quarter and led throughout, although the Challengers (13-9, 9-5) put a scare into things with a fourth-quarter surge.

Cascade Christian freshman Jordan Martinez, called up from the junior varsity only two weeks ago, drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at 40-all with about 1:30 to play. Rogue River sophomore Jessa Fricke answered with a layup and Cascade junior Amber Brown made 1 of 3 free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt to put the game at 42-41.

Rogue River freshman Alli Ehrhardt then made two free throws to build the final cushion.

"After that we just tried to keep the ball away from Martinez and we did," said coach Ehrhardt.

All nine of Martinez's points came in the fourth quarter, while teammate Lindsey Blodgett also had nine.

Ehrhardt was 8-for-9 from the foul line to lead Rogue River with 13 points, while senior Sabrina Smith had nine points and Fricke added a career-high eight points to go with seven rebounds.

With the loss, the Challengers fell into a tie for third place and could conceivably host Rogue River in a playoff Thursday as the No. 4 seed or travel to play No. 2-seed Gold Beach as the No. 3 seed. A tiebreaker game against Bandon for the rights to the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds will be played Wednesday at a neutral site.
