Cascade Christian claims top spot in Sunset
In their regular-season finale, the Cascade Christian boys basketball team got sucked into Rogue River's style of play and nearly scuffed up their flawless record in the Sunset League.
The second-ranked Challengers would have none of that with the Sunset's top seed on the line Saturday.
Scott Morse scored 19 points to become Cascade Christian's all-time leading scorer and led the Challengers to a 68-43 victory at The Pavilion.
The Challengers (23-3) will host first-round foe Harrisburg, which is ranked fourth in Class 3A, next Saturday. The Chieftains will also host their playoff game with Horizon Christian.
"We kind of got drawn into their pace so we got drawn into taking a lot of shots we didn't want to shoot," said Challengers coach Brian Morse of his team's 61-52 win over Rogue River on Feb. 16. "This time we did a lot better job of running through our offense to get better looks."
The Challengers broke out on both ends of the floor in the second quarter and built a 37-20 halftime lead.
"Both teams played real aggressive, physical defense," said Morse. "I just felt we handled it a lot better. Our pressure seemed to get to them in the second quarter and it gave us a boost offensively because we got some steals and got out on some fastbreaks."
Dustin Hutley got the Challengers off to their hot start, scoring six of their first eight points, and then netted eight in the fourth quarter. He finished with 16 points overall.
Morse, who tied Marty Maurer's school mark of 1,550 in the aforementioned contest with Rogue River, now stands alone with 1,569 points.
Morse and Jarrod Hess each had five assists. Hess also added 12 points and Eli Hoffman drained three 3-pointers for all of his nine points.
Brendan Schoner paced the Chieftains with 10 points.
