Beck rises to the top at GP Rotary

GRANTS PASS — Crater junior Kelley Beck started Saturday with the state's 10th best time in the 400-meter dash.

He finished it with the very best.

Beck cemented his status as a state contender with a compelling performance at the 60th annual Grants Pass Rotary Invitational at Grants Pass High School.

Beck won the 400 with a time of 49.15 seconds, which eclipses his personal best of 50.18 and moves him atop the state list by 0.20 seconds.

"He's the best sprinter we've seen in a while at Crater," Comets' coach Justin Loftus said. "Last year he was dinged up and not as focused. He's at a different level physically and mentally this year."

Beck struggled with a hamstring injury last season, but Saturday he became the first Class 5A competitor to run under 50 seconds in the 400.

"My main focus is just staying healthy," said Beck, who adds that his next goal is the school record of 48.81 set by Bryan Berryhill in 1996. "I know I'm capable of running fast if I'm healthy. Looking at the times from up North, that just motivated me to prove I can run with the best in the state."

Beck's was one of a number of notable achievements from Rogue Valley competitors at the 42-team meet, generally the final major meet prior to districts and state.

The South Medford boys won the team title behind a record-tying effort from junior Josh Milhollin and four second-place finishes.

Milhollin tied the school's all-time mark of 6 feet, 7 inches in winning the high jump. He attempted 6-8 but clipped the bar with his heels on the third attempt, his closest.

"I thought I had it," Milhollin said. "I was really close."

Milhollin's personal best was 6-4, a mark he'd reached in most meets this season. He said the cool weather conditions were a benefit.

"I like the way he competed," South Medford coach Bill Rowan said of Milhollin. "Josh always gives it his best shot."

The Panthers received second-place finishes from Spencer Denton in the 200 (23.30), Mitch Singler in the 400 (50.57), Micah Diaz in the 300 hurdles (40.17) and Daniel Kinney in the javelin (177-4).

Rogue River's Cole Watson engaged in a thrilling 1,500-meter race with Hidden Valley's Connor Kasler. Watson led the first two laps by a narrow margin before Kasler pulled in front early on the bell lap. With 75 meters to go, Watson, despite nearly being spiked on Kasler's move, again pulled in front and finished with a personal-best time of 4:00.36. Kasler finished in 4:00.76.

"Connor always brings great competition," Watson said. "He's my favorite person to run against. He ran a great race. I just took the opportunity when I saw it."

Cascade Christian's Ashleigh Soltis and Crater's Holly Haga also earned individual titles. Soltis won the 100 in 12.87, 0.03 seconds off her fastest time, which is also tops in Class 3A. Soltis finished second in the 200 at 27.20. Haga edged Cascade Christian's Rachelle Buck in the discus with a mark of 119-4. Buck's top throw was 118-5.

Though she finished second to Henley star Taylor Wallace, Crater's Kayleigh Tyerman set school and personal records in the 800.

Tyerman finished in 2:11.49, topping the 29-year-old school record of 2:13.80 set by Debbie Simon. Tyerman's personal best was 2:14.47.

Wallace, who took her first lead in the race on the final straightaway, finished with a state-best time of 2:11.16 — a meet record. Tyerman's time also bettered the previous meet record as did third-place finisher Sydnie Johnson of Churchill (2:14.55). The previous top time of 2:15.53, set by Glendale's Iris Cripps, stood for 15 years.

It might be Tyerman's final venture in the 800. Runners are allowed entry into only two distance events at the state meet, and Tyerman said she is leaning toward running the 1,500 and 3,000.

"I really love them all," she said. "I wanted to put it all out there today."

Tyerman also ran a leg on Crater's 4x400 relay team that took second after St. Mary's was disqualified with one runner unable to remove a piece of jewelry prior to the race.

St. Mary's holds the Class 2A best time in the event and led until Henley overtook the Crusaders on the final turn of the third leg. The Hornets held a sizable lead from there.

West Valley, of Cottonwood, Calif., won the girls team title with 77 points. South Medford was fourth with 43.50.

Four meet records fell, all on the girls side. Wallace, in addition to her 800 record, set the 1,500 record in 4:35.86. The previous top time was 4:38.40 set by South Eugene's Sarah Pearson in 2004.

Marshfield's Moriah Roberge cleared 12-1 in the pole vault to better the mark of 12-0 set by South Eugene's Lindsay Beard last year.

Klamath Union's Katey Choukalos' mark of 18-2 in the long jump broke Marshfield's Jo Boatright's 2001 mark of 17-103/4.
