Ashland boys advance doubles team at districts

ASHLAND — Jeff Laskos and Chas Barnard, Ashland's top doubles team, secured a state tournament berth during the opening day of the District 4 boys tennis tournament at Hunter Park Thursday.

The district tournament concludes May 15 at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club.

The seven-school district played singles and doubles matches through the quarterfinals on the first day of the tournament. All players reaching the semifinals are guaranteed a spot in the Class 5A state tournament May 21-23.

Laskos and Barnard, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, had to come from behind in the quarterfinals against Marshfield's David Perrin and Jamey Moriarty. The Ashland team dropped the first set 6-0, but rallied to win 6-4 and 6-0 to move into the semifinals against the No. 2 seed — Matt Walker and Daniel Nellis of Churchill.

Ashland's Nick Cross and Alex Harris lost a quarterfinal match to top-seeded Lukas Holasek and Jessie Diamond of Thurston, 6-4, 6-4.

Holasek and Diamond will face Marshfield's Markus Boesl and Colby Trull in the other semifinal match.

In singles, the Grizzlies advanced three players — Quincy Briscoe, Noah Kass and Nate Harris — to the quarterfinals but each player lost in three sets. Briscoe lost to No. 3-seed Jeff Forrest of Thurston, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, Kass dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision to No. 4 Connor Horne of Churchill and Harris was beaten by No. 2 Jon Massie of Marshfield, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Defending District 4 singles champion, junior Chris Wiechert of Churchill, is the fourth player to reach the semifinals. Wiechert plays Forrest in one semifinal match, while Horne and Massie square off in the other.
