Schmidt has record day for Tornado

EUGENE — North Medford senior star Taylor Schmidt threw a one-hitter in six innings and broke the school's home run record on Monday.

More importantly, Schmidt assured her softball team the No. 2 seed in the Southwest Conference with a 10-0 triumph over Sheldon.

The win gave the Black Tornado (18-4, 9-3 SWC) a three-game edge over third-place Roseburg, solidifying the No. 2 spot behind Grants Pass.

Schmidt allowed a single to Sheldon's Tami Brown in the fourth inning and did not surrender a walk to go with five strikeouts. Freshman Kelsie Bartley spelled Schmidt in the seventh and struck out two in a 1-2-3 frame.

Schmidt later gave the Black Tornado a 9-0 lead with her seventh homer of the season, a two-run drive over the left field fence. She passed Terri Walker, whose record of six homers had stood since 1981.

Schmidt finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Jenna Stevens went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Tejay Schmidt and McKenna Storey each went 2-for-4 in the win.
