Engle, Pirates secure Skyline championship

KLAMATH FALLS — Daniel Engle paced Phoenix to the Skyline Conference title in boys golf by carding a 75 at Running Y on Tuesday.

Engle shot a 39 on the front nine and a 36 on the back two earn medalist honors. His two-day total was 153. Phoenix finished Day 2 with a 332 and a two-day total of 667. Phoenix's Alex Hobson held the lead in the race for medalist after Day 1, but he carded an 81 on Day 2 to finish in second overall with a 157.

Henley, behind a Kyle Dearing's combined 160, took second at 679.

North Valley shot the best round in Day 2 with a 331 and finished third overall. Ryan Melnychuk and Garrett Schwietert captured individual state berths as well as Hidden Valley's Carmen Oliveri.

SWC DISTRICT — At Grants Pass, Sheldon overwhelmed South Medford with its best round of the season to leapfrog the Panthers for the Southwest Conference's second berth to state.

South Eugene, the overall champion, also won the two-day district title with a score of 624 at Grants Pass Golf Club.

The next state spot went to the district runner-up. South Medford had an eight-shot lead on Sheldon entering Day 2, but Sheldon carved out a 320 for an overall score of 659 to the Panthers' 347 and 678.

North Medford's Hamilton Baehr, the first-day leader, came in at 79 and was third overall. He qualified for state along with South Medford's Brandon Bol, who shot 78 and tied for fifth.

State is Monday and Tuesday at Emerald Valley in Creswell.

SOUTHERN SKY DISTRICT — At Eagle Point, Eagle Point's Travis Hawthorne shot a second-round 79 to finish second at the district championship at Eagle Point Golf Club, making him one of three Eagles to qualify for next week's Class 5A state tournament in Creswell.

Hawthorne's two-day total of 166 was 11 strokes behind medalist Jackson Kintzinger of Klamath Union, who won or shared medalist honors for the fifth straight time in SSC play. Kintzinger overcame three double bogeys on the front nine to shoot 78 on Day 2 — the best round at EPGC — and finish with a 155 total.

First-round leader Seth Reynolds, also from Klamath Union, was disqualified after using a broken putter. The Pelicans, who had already clinched a team spot in the state tourney by winning the SSC regular-season championship, were forced to count Derek Hines' 112 in their team total and dropped to third place with a team score of 745.

Ashland, runner-up in the regular season, took the district championship and the league's second spot at state behind the steady play of senior Matt Naylor and junior Clint Murphy. Murphy shot an 88 to finish in third place at 172, while Naylor's second-round 84 left him one shot back in fourth at 173.

Eagle Point's Tanner Scott carded a 92 for a two-day total of 177 to finish tied for fifth with Ashland's Michael Wurzell, while fellow Eagle Hunter DeLange finished seventh at 182, a single stroke ahead of Crater's Jordan Roberts, in earning individual bids to state.

DISTRICT 6 TOURNAMENT — At Brookings, St. Mary's Alex Street clinched medalist honors with a second-day best 77, and the Crusaders won the team title with a 349 at Salmon Run.

Street finished with a two-day total of 157, and St. Mary's edged Cascade Christian 701-742 in the team race.

The Crusaders got a key contribution from their No. 5 player Ian Wayman. He shot a 90 on Day 1 and a career-best 85 on Day 2.

Each St. Mary's golfer placed in the top 10 overall.

Cascade Christian was led by Mike McNall's 89 on Day 2 for a two-day total of 171. He was second overall.
