Powers, North repeat as SWC champs

CRESWELL — North Medford upped its streak to four consecutive girls golf district championships Tuesday, placing all five of its players in the top six to run away and hide in the Southwest Conference.

The Black Tornado, getting a dominant performance from medalist Sunshine Powers, shot a 361 team score at Emerald Valley Golf Course, bettering Day 2 runner-up Sheldon by 34 strokes.

North Medford, also the regular-season champion, and Sheldon advance to the state tournament Monday and Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.

The Tornado has the same team as last year heading to state, and all but one of the girls is making their third straight trip. It placed sixth last year, third the year before and seventh in 2006.

Abby Perkins, who shot a 42 on the back side Tuesday for a 93, has been one of the program's top five players each of the past four years.

Powers, a junior, won her second straight SWC title, shooting an 80. She was third as a freshman.

Powers was even par through the first seven holes, but a couple double bogeys knocked her back.

The top three individuals not on the two advancing teams also make state. South Medford's Ryann Cuthbertson was among those, placing third overall following an 87.
