North boys sweep finals; Tornado girls share SWC title
North Medford's boys tennis team couldn't have enjoyed a better Saturday showing at the Southwest Conference district tournament in Roseburg and still had to settle for second place.
The day didn't go quite as smoothly for the Black Tornado girls but they were still able to come away with a share of the SWC district title at North Medford High.
Tanner Borg earned his fourth straight conference title in doubles for the North boys, teaming with Austin Schoenlein to dominate Saturday's action. The Tornado tandem beat South Eugene's Eli Zauner and David Foley 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals, then dispatched Alex Motsch and Ryan Kingzett of South Eugene in the finals, 6-2, 6-2.
In boys singles, Colt Hoeptner and David Tribble made sure it would be an all-North finals, with Hoeptner beating South Eugene's Demetrius Fang 6-1, 6-4 in the semis and Tribble upsetting No. 2 seed Ian Strgar of South Eugene 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
In the finals, Hoeptner edged Tribble 6-4, 6-4.
Despite sweeping the individual titles, North Medford came up short for the third straight year in the team race to South Eugene. The Axemen used their overall depth to total 42 points, while the Tornado scored 38. South Eugene edged North by one point for the SWC title the prior two seasons.
The North Medford girls ran into a roadblock in the semifinals, with singles standout Sierra Severson and the top-seeded tandem of Carissa Arnesen and Jaci Abeloe failing to pick up a Day 2 victory. Despite that, the Black Tornado still managed to tie Sheldon for the district title as each tallied 28 points.
Severson dropped a tough 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 decision to Kelsey Frey of Grants Pass in her singles semifinal, then came up short in a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Lea Ullrich of Grants Pass in the third-place final.
Arnesen and Abeloe had their semifinal with Sheldon's Paige Bennett and Kelsi Vanheisse come down to the wire, but the Irish duo staved off the Tornado for a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 triumph. In the third-place final, Arnesen and Abeloe lost 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 to Sammy Kalen and Amber Craviotte of Sheldon.
The Class 6A state tournaments run next Thursday through Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (6A-5A girls and boys) and West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club (6A-5A boys).
