North sweeps Axemen, claims second

EUGENE — North Medford got standout pitching from Taylor Schmidt and completed the regular season with a Southwest Conference sweep of South Eugene Saturday, 11-0 in six innings and 13-0 in five innings.

Schmidt, the winning pitcher in both games, ran her record to 19-5 overall. She came within two outs of a perfect game in the nightcap before surrendering two hits.

The Black Tornado (20-5, 11-4 SWC) placed second in the conference and hosts a first round Class 6A playoff game Friday against Westview of Portland.

"This was a good way for us to finish," said North coach Mike Mayben. "We just came out and played a complete game. We played solid softball. We scored a lot of runs and got a lot of hits, and Taylor pitched extremely well."

Schmidt and Kelsie Bartley combined on a no-hitter in the opener. Schmidt went the first six, struck out nine and walked two. Bartley fanned three and walked one.

Hannah Leming was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. McKenna Storey, Amanda Wolfe and Tejay Schmidt each had two hits and combined to score seven runs.

In Game 2, Schmidt didn't allow a hit until Rhi Neuville singled with one out in the fifth. The Tornado senior also was 4-for-4 and drove in four runs.
