Challengers hold off RR in Sunset finale

ROGUE RIVER — Cascade Christian appeared to be cruising in its final regular-season Sunset League softball game against Rogue River Tuesday.

Challengers' starting pitcher Jasmine Gomez had limited the Chieftains to two runs on three hits through six innings, and the Challengers led 8-2.

Rogue River made it interesting with four runs in the final inning but still came up on the losing end, 8-6.

Even with a victory, Rogue River (10-9, 8-6 Sunset) could not have improved its Sunset League seeding. The Chieftains would have tied Cascade for third in the standings with a win, but the Challengers (14-8, 10-4 Sunset) held the tiebreaker for the league playoffs.

The two teams will meet again at 4 p.m. Thursday at U.S. Cellular Community Park in a league-seeding game for the Class 3A state playoffs. The winner will garner at least the No. 3 berth and will play at Glide on Friday for the Sunset's No. 2 seed. The loser gets the No. 4 seed.
