Third-inning surge helps Crater advance

EUGENE — Crater senior Brittany Reeves pitched a two-hitter and the Comets ousted Churchill in the Class 5A softball state quarterfinals for the third straight year, this time with a 6-2 triumph Friday.

The Lancers pushed across two unearned runs in the first inning, then Reeves (15-7) tossed shutout ball the rest of the way. Reeves struck out seven, walked one and faced just 25 batters.

A leadoff walk to No. 9 hitter Sarah Smith began a five-run rally in the third inning for the two-time defending state champion Comets.

Dennae Grant singled and Smith scored on an error after Kayla Hopkinson's hard grounder to second. Grant went to third on the play and scored on a passed ball to tie the game 2-all. Renee Murphy followed with an RBI double, and scored when Sarah Haga's deep fly ball was dropped. Tara Ruvalcaba completed the outburst with an RBI double.

Murphy was the only Comet to finish with two hits.

The victory for Crater (16-12) sets up a semifinal rematch with The Dalles Wahtonka at home on Tuesday. The Comets defeated The Dalles Wahtonka 3-2 in a rain-shortened contest last year.
