Tygerson leads Ashland into semis
EUGENE — Garrett Tygerson pitched a five-hitter and had a productive day at the plate as Ashland defeated North Eugene 5-1 in the Class 5A state quarterfinals at Swede Johnson Stadium Friday.
It's the second straight year Ashland has bounced North Eugene out of the state playoffs in the quarterfinal round.
The victory earns the defending state champion Grizzlies (23-4) a home semifinal date Tuesday with Corvallis (25-4), which beat Bend 10-2.
Tygerson allowed one unearned run in registering his fourth complete-game win of the season, striking out five and walking one. He also went 3-for-4 with a double and a solo home run.
"(Tygerson) is just a great pitcher," Ashland coach Don Senestraro said. "He's always around the plate, he's got great stuff, he changes speeds well. He's always good, and whenever we put him out there we know we have a chance to win."
Luke Baldrica's double to center scored Hayden Miller from third to give Ashland the first run of the game in the second. The Grizzlies added one insurance run in each of the next two innings — an RBI double by Tygerson in the third and a run-scoring single by Charlie Sebrell in the fourth.
Miller was 3-for-4 and scored twice, while designated hitter Kealii Cecil went 2-for-2 and also added a sacrifice bunt that led to the Grizzlies' first run.
