Lomax's big night leads North past South

HILLSBORO — Mitch Singler said 'good-bye' to prep football and 'hello' to the college game Saturday night.

Singler, a first-team all-state receiver from South Medford, caught seven passes for 114 yards and a touchdown in the 62nd annual Les Schwab Bowl at Hillsboro Stadium. He was named the South back of the game for his efforts.

Although the South lost 32-14, Singler got a good look at the quarterback he'll be catching passes from in the future — Jack Lomax.

Lomax, a 6-foot-3 grad from Lake Oswego, passed for two touchdowns and ran for two others and was named Most Valuable Player of the all-star football game that features the state's top Class 6A and 5A seniors.

"I'm very excited about going to school with him," Singler said of his future teammate. "He's got a great arm and is great on his feet. I can't wait to get to Corvallis."

Six other players from Rogue Valley schools took part in the annual all-star classic, which moved to Hillsboro Stadium for the first time. Patrick Thibeault and Daniel Kinney of South Medford, Darrio Mobley and Kenny Fahndrich of Crater, Justin Hannah of Grants Pass and Garrett Davis of Eagle Point also played for the South.

Both Lomax and Singler played key roles for their teams Saturday night.

Singler had a pair of catches that gained 54 yards on the South's lone scoring drive in the first half, which ended with the North leading 18-7. He split double coverage and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass in the second half.

Lomax led all five of the North scoring drives. He completed 18 of 28 passes for 178 yards and ran for 8 yards. Lomax guided the North 76 yards in 12 plays to a score on the opening drive of the game and showcased his overall value to his team by closing the drive with a 1-yard plunge. Several times Lomax escaped pressure to complete passes, which drove South defenders crazy during the game.

"He's very elusive," said Fahndrich, who is headed for the College of the Siskiyous. "He's got a good arm and good feet. He's an overall weapon."

Fahndrich led the South team with seven unassisted tackles, while Mobley had four tackles and Davis notched three. Kinney had two tackles and broke up one pass.

Lomax and Singler will be teamed together starting July 12 when OSU student athletes begin a program to get prepped for college athletics.

"Mitch looks like a possession-type receiver," Lomax said. "I'm looking forward to working up the depth chart with him."

Hannah, a linebacker, said he's going to attempt to walk on to the University of Oregon program and will be looking forward to seeing Lomax and Singler again.

"Lomax is a very shifty player," said Hannah, who notched five tackles. "I'll be looking forward to getting another shot at stopping him."

Lomax scored on a 1-yard plunge to make it 6-0 and then connected with Ryan Lacey for a 3-yard score to put North up 12-0.

Matt McHenry scored on a 1-yard run for the South team to trim the deficit to 12-7 in the second quarter, but Lomax came right back with another 1-yard run for the 18-7 lead at halftime.

Lomax connected with Lake Oswego teammate Micah Hatfield on a 24-yard scoring strike to push the North lead to 24-7 before Singler's TD reception made things interesting with 11:05 to play.

Barlow standout Malcolm Johnson, however, erased any doubt of a North victory minutes later when he scampered 52 yards to pay dirt for the game's final score. Johnson led all ballcarriers with 121 yards on nine carries, while South quarterback Tym Pearson scrambled 12 times for 75 yards to pace his team.

Thibeault carried four times for 4 yards, caught one pass for 4 yards and made two tackles, while Davis made two receptions for 17 yards.
