Perry, Morgan lead South at SWC meet
ROSEBURG — South Medford had a second-place finisher in boys and girls competition Tuesday during the Southwest Conference pre-district cross country meet.
South Medford junior Ryan Perry clocked 19 minutes, 28 seconds to place second among the boys. The winner, Sheldon junior Matthew Melancon, won in 19:07.
For the girls, sophomore Lauren Morgan tied South Eugene's Amelia Helmick for second place, each crossing the line in a time of 19:52. South Eugene junior Nora Wilson was the girls' winner with a time of 19:49.
Sophomore Brenna Phelps was North Medford's top finisher. She timed 20:12, which was good for third. Senior Blake Durkee headed the list of North Medford boys, finishing sixth overall in 20:14.
Stetson Smith finished right behind Durkee to take seventh (20:16) for the Black Tornado.
South Medford also received solid outings from Travis Jantzer (20:36), Kelsey Bradshaw (20:42) and Jack Delaney (21:16).
ASHLAND SWEEPS MEDFORD — At Ashland, Kallie Walker had six goals and Eliana Pool added three more as the Ashland girls defeated Medford 14-2 in their season opener, while Jake Gavin scored six times and Forrest Kollar had five goals as the Grizzly boys topped Medford 26-5.
Goalie Carley Santee had 14 blocks for the Ashland girls, while Medford counterpart Hannah Gilder had 13 blocks.
Nilsa Gibson and Chloe Beecher each had a goal for Medford.
In boys action, Lucas Opgenorth and Wynn Michael scored four goals and goalie Willis Plummer added five blocks to help pace Ashland.
Medford got two goals apiece from Walker Ross and Robert Denton and another goal by Reid Gibson. Medford goalie Jeff Hyde blocked seven shots.
