Smith helps Phoenix down North Valley

PHOENIX — Danielle Smith demonstrated her versatility for Phoenix in Skyline Conference volleyball Tuesday.

Smith, normally an outside hitter, was moved to setter by coach Tiffany York to improve the Pirates' offensive efficiency.

And the switch paid off as Phoenix defeated North Valley, 25-17, 13-25, 25-16, 25-23.

Smith dished out 14 assists in her role as a full-time setter to go with six blocks and four kills.

"(Smith) sacrificed for the team," said York. "She was intricate in our offense in getting our hitters some good sets."

The Pirates front line of Kelsie Bradfield and Meagan Cheyene in the middle and outside hitter Ashley Hendricks responded with a productive match. Bradshaw had a team-high nine blocks and eight kills, while Cheyene produced seven kills and seven blocks, and Hendricks pounded seven kills.

"We have a diversified front row," said York. "Whoever is in we have a strong attack regardless of our rotation. We communicated well and were consistent throughout the match."

HENLEY 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, Andrea Straw was 21-of-22 serving with nine aces as No. 4 Henley won in straight sets, 25-8, 25-9, 25-2.

Hornets sophomore middle Elle Morgan contributed five kills and had no hitting errors.

Sunset Conference

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, COQUILLE 0 — At Coquille, Breanna Holtz led No. 6 Cascade Christian with 23 assists, seven digs and five aces in the 25-9, 25-20, 25-10 win.

Becca Sellers added 15 kills for the 9-0 Challengers, while Jonnie Gilley had four aces and two blocks, and Amanda Kinney recorded six digs.

ROGUE RIVER 3, REEDSPORT 0 — At Reedsport, Rogue River posted a 25-21, 25-15, 26-24 victory with the help of Jessica Freitas, who notched three kills, 20 assists and nine digs.

Alli Ehrhardt added nine blocks, 11 kills, and 15 digs, and Holly Winzler contributed six aces, and 10 digs for the Chieftains (6-5, 5-4 Sunset).

Southern Cascade League

ST. MARY'S 3, CHILOQUIN 0 — At Chiloquin, fifth-ranked St. Mary's recorded 20 team aces in a 25-19, 25-12, 25-12 road victory.

Kate Traister led the Crusaders (16-2, 5-0 SCL) with six aces and teammate Domonique Valdez had five aces and 12 digs.

Alexi Provost-Shean had nine kills and four blocks, and Jordan Jackson added 26 assists for St. Mary's.

Mountain Valley League

BUTTE FALLS 3, PROSPECT 2 — At Butte Falls, Butte Falls got strong defensive play from Aarika Stephens, Beth Sutfin and Brenna Ferguson in a 25-16, 9-25, 25-19, 17-25, 15-10 win.

Stephens, who had six aces, recorded 19 passes on serve-receive and 12 digs. Sutfin had 12 passes and 11 digs, and Brenna Ferguson 19 passes and 10 digs.

Bessie Taylor added 20 kills as the Loggers (6-4, 5-3 MVL) avenged an earlier loss to the Cougars.

Prospect served at 93 percent and got eight kills and three blocks from Keirstyn Anderson, seven kills from Shelbie Zelnar, six kills from Kayla Pulley, 12 digs from Alexis Zeller and 12 assists from Kristen Reynolds.

The Cougars are 8-3 and 5-3.
