No. 7 Mustangs prove too much for the Pirates

MURPHY — Phoenix came out active on defense against Hidden Valley in Skyline Conference volleyball Tuesday.

But the seventh-ranked Mustangs got stronger as the match progressed and posted a 25-18, 25-12, 25-12 victory.

"I was impressed with the Phoenix defense in the first game," said Hidden Valley coach Robert Jackson. "They blocked well."

Bailey Bars and Joelle Swanson paced the Hidden Valley front line. Bars, a sophomore outside, pounded 10 kills and Swanson provided 10 blocks

The Mustangs received strong defense from libero Sabrina Peckham, who registered a team-high 11 digs, and Kelsey Lack.

"Our defense did a good job settling in and passing well," added Jackson.

For Phoenix, juniors Meagan Cheyne and Kelsie Bradfield combined for nine kills and 16 blocks.

Setter Danielle Smith passed out seven assists for the Pirates and Annika Pond played strong defense, coming up with 13 digs.

NORTH VALLEY 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Cave Junction, Savana Drew had a big match offensively and defensively to help North Valley to a 15-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-18 win.

Drew, an outside hitter, slammed 14 kills and retrieved 32 digs in the match.

The Knights (2-11, 2-4 Skyline) also received strong performances from Megan Brazille (seven kills) and Hannah Zyirek (18 assists).

Illinois Valley is 2-14 overall and 0-6 in Skyline play.

Sunset League

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, GLIDE 0 — Breanna Holtz led Cascade Christian with 25 assists, eight digs and five aces in a 25-14, 25-5, 25-10 sweep of Glide in Sunset League action.

Becca Sellers had 13 kills and Amanda Kinney added 11 kills, while Mackenzie Kelton chipped in with two solo blocks.

ROGUE RIVER 3, BANDON 0 — At Rogue River, Alli Ehrhardt paced Rogue River with 10 kills, six blocks and four digs as the Chieftains prevailed 25-13, 25-20, 25-17.

Makaela Stalker added four kills and seven digs for the Chieftains (7-6, 6-5 Sunset), while Jessica Freitas had 24 assists and two kills.
