North Medford comes up short against the Axemen

North Medford played hard to force a fifth game, but ran out of gas in the process against South Eugene in Southwest Conference volleyball Tuesday.

The Black Tornado dropped a tough five-set match to the visiting Axemen, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-27, 15-6.

"I think we ran out of gas a little it," North Medford coach Erika Wright said. "We had worked really hard in that fourth game ... and just couldn't put it away.

"That's the good that we're trying to take out of it."

Senior outside hitter Hillevi Johnson had 20 digs and 11 kills, and fellow senior Danielle Boyd added 12 kills, 10 digs and four blocks for the Black Tornado (2-5 SWC).

Sophomore middle hitter Caiti Barrie chipped in five aces and six blocks for North Medford.

ROSEBURG 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — Ashley Denn had six kills and Sam Owirka added 12 assists for South Medford, which lost in straight sets to visiting Roseburg, 25-11, 25-16, 25-12.

Grace Brennan had four blocks for the Panthers, which dropped to 0-6 in conference.

SHELDON 3, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Grants Pass, Sheldon fended off Grants Pass for a 25-19, 26-24, 25-17 victory.

The Cavemen were led by Kelsey Saxon's six kills and 10 digs. Mikayla Morgan added 28 assists, while Rebekah Holman had eight kills, Mikaela Zottola notched three blocks and Grace Marsh had 13 digs.

Southern Sky Conference

ASHLAND 3, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Ashland, third-ranked Ashland remained undefeated in conference play with the 25-12, 25-15, 25-12 win.

The Grizzlies (6-0 SSC) were led by Callie McCoy, who had 21 assists, and Niki Small, who had 12 kills and 14 aces. Hayley Ross and Sam Boehnke also combined for 19 kills and four blocks, while Piper Cantrell contributed 19 digs.
