St. Mary's defeats Lakeview, clinches SCL title

LAKEVIEW — Samantha Bayer and Domonique Valdez performed crucial roles to help St. Mary's defeat Lakeview Thursday and clinch its first Southern Cascade League volleyball title since 2002.

Bayer and Valdez were perfect on serve-receive and active defensively as the third-ranked Crusaders posted a 25-20, 25-16, 24-26, 25-23 victory.

Bayer, a junior libero, came up with 25 digs and was successful on 17 serve-receives, while Valdez had 11 digs and handled 25 serves without an error.

St. Mary's (21-3, 7-0 SCL) had a match point in Game 3, but the Honkers rallied for the win. In the fourth set, the Crusaders sided out to tie the game at 23-all. Two points later, Kylee Adderson ended the match with a kill.

The Crusaders got a productive match from front-line players of Danielle Shubat, Alexis Provost-Shean and Kylee Adderson. Shubat, a senior outside, had a team-high 12 kills to go with 20 digs. Provost-Shean, a sophomore middle, had a season-high 12 blocks and six kills, while Adderson added 10 kills and five blocks.

St. Mary's setter Jordan Jackson was effective distributing the ball with 30 assists and chipped in eight kills.

Southwest Conference

NORTH MEDFORD 3, GRANTS PASS 2 — At Grants Pass, North Medford overcame three match points en route to a thrilling comeback victory, 13-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 18-16, against host Grants Pass.

With the victory, the Black Tornado (3-5 SWC) has clinched the fourth and final Southwest Conference bid into the Class 6A playoffs. North Medford is up two games on Grants Pass (1-7 SWC) with two remaining. However, the Black Tornado swept the Cavers to earn the tiebreaker.

Hillevi Johnson recorded 15 kills, 19 digs and seven aces, and Danielle Boyd had 14 kills, five aces and 16 assists for North Medford. Teammate Emily Otoski finished with 20 assists, eight digs and three aces.

Mikaela Zottola had nine kills, Mikayla Morgan 26 assists and Grace Marsh 37 digs to lead Grants Pass.

SOUTH EUGENE 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — Ashley Denn, one of two South Medford seniors playing on senior night, was strong on the back row and had three kills in the 25-13, 25-11, 25-14 loss to visiting South Eugene.

Teammate Grace Brennan had a team-high six kills, Madi Sash added five and Sam Owirka finished with 15 assists for the Panthers (0-8 SWC).

SHELDON 3, ROSEBURG 0 — At Eugene, Gabbi Parker had 14 kills to lead Sheldon to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-18 win against visiting Roseburg.

The victory clinched the Southwest Conference title for the Irish (8-0 SWC).

Southern Sky Conference

CRATER 3, KLAMATH UNION 1 — At Central Point, Crater overcame some early senior night jitters to register a 24-26, 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 victory.

Comet team-leader Taylor Mackey had another excellent match with 15 digs, 13 kills and four aces.

Renee Murphy, a sophomore middle, contributed eight kills and four blocks, while junior outside Jaimee Boscovich added five kills and five digs for the Comets (4-5, 3-3 SSC).

Crater setter Kayla Hopkinson dished out 32 assists.

EAGLE POINT 3, MAZAMA 0 — At Eagle Point, Kristin Wyatt had 16 kills and nine digs to lead host Eagle Point to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 victory.

Hannah Mason added seven kills and four blocks, and teammate Ashley Wilson had five aces for the Eagles (2-4 SSC).

Skyline Conference

HENLEY 3, PHOENIX 0 — At Phoenix, Annika Pond had 10 digs and Chelsea Horvath added eight in Phoenix's 25-20, 25-22, 25-8 loss to visiting Henley.

Kelsie Bradfield added four kills and six blocks, and teammate Meagan Cheyne had five kills and five blocks for the Pirates (4-4 Skyline).

HIDDEN VALLEY 3, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Merlin, No. 7 Hidden Valley played its most complete conference match with a 25-13, 25-11, 25-13 win.

Middle blocker Joelle Swanson had 11 kills, four blocks and two aces to pace the Mustangs' attack. Skylar Fate, a sophomore middle, added four kills and four blocks.

Hidden Valley received 13 digs and two aces from libero Sabrina Peckham, while setter Amanda Doig accounted for 22 assists.

Sunset Conference

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, GOLD BEACH 0 — At Gold Beach, Cascade Christian used a strong defensive effort to post a 25-10, 25-12, 25-16 victory.

The fifth-ranked Challengers improved to 12-0 in the Sunset and are on track to achieve their third consecutive undefeated league season.

Cascade setter Breanna Holtz had an effective match with 27 assists, 12 digs and three aces.

Becca Sellers provided 17 kills and nine digs for the Challengers, while junior outside Amanda Kinney had 12 digs and five kills. Nikki Jones chipped in 10 digs.

GLIDE 3, ROGUE RIVER 2 — At Glide, Rogue River's Jesse Sondag recorded 14 kills, four blocks and 30 digs in a five-set loss, 24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 19-17, to host Glide.

Teammate Alli Ehrhardt added 14 blocks, eight kills and 11 digs, and Makaela Stalker had eight blocks and six digs for the Chieftains (6-6 Sunset).
