Jordan, Morgan win SWC cross country titles

ROSEBURG — North Medford and South Medford turned in successful performances at the Southwest Conference cross country district meet at Stewart Park Saturday.

North Medford, for just the second time in school history, won the boys team title, and Drew Jordan repeated as conference champion for the Black Tornado.

Lauren Morgan of South Medford won the individual girls championship, and the Panthers qualified for the state meet for the third straight year with a second-place finish to South Eugene.

The top two boys and girls teams and the four fastest individuals not on those teams advanced to the state meet next Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Jordan and Morgan overcame wet, sloppy conditions to register lifetime bests in winning their respective 5,000-meter races.

Jordan — the defending state champion — posted a time of 15 minutes, 42 seconds, edging Matthew Melancon of Sheldon by two seconds.

"(Jordan) was nice and composed," North Medford coach Piet Voskes said. "He chose his points carefully and made good decisions throughout the race."

North Medford tallied a low score of 34 points to 43 for runner-up Sheldon. South Medford finished fifth (113).

The Black Tornado placed all five scoring runners in the top 10.

"That's huge," said Voskes. "Our back end, Stetson Smith and Blake Durkee, turned in two gutsy performances."

Smith and Durkee finished ninth and 10th, respectively. David Huddleston (sixth) and Ammon Ebert (eighth) completed the North team.

South Medford junior Ryan Perry, in his first year running cross country, finished third (15:55) with the third-best time in school history.

Morgan, a sophomore, lowered her personal best by approximately one minute in winning the girls race with a school-record 18:28. Morgan used a late kick to defeat second-place finisher Paige Kouba of South Eugene by one second.

Morgan stayed in the main pack until about 800 meters to go.

"She made her move with authority and didn't look back," said South Medford coach Josh Wallace. "She ran a very smart race. She didn't try to win the race in the first mile."

Morgan's older sister, senior Riley Morgan, also posted a personal record to finish seventh (18:50).

South Eugene won the girls crown with 24 points. South Medford totaled 61 to edge Sheldon (65) and North Medford (72).

Other scoring runners on South's state-bound team are Devon Armstrong (14th), Kelsey Bradshaw (16) and Erica Chelgren (23).

"We were optimistic but not overly confident we would make it back to state," said Wallace. "Our girls put it together at the right time."

North Medford has two girls that will advance to state meet — Brenna Phelps and Breanna Pyper.
