Ashland High boys claim second straight water polo championship

TUALATIN — For the second straight year the Ashland boys defeated Parkrose for the Class 5A state water polo championship.

Forrest Kollar scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway pass from goalie Willis Plummer with 30 seconds remaining to guide the Grizzlies to the 11-10 win on Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center.

In the back-and-forth game, Ashland scored five goals in the fourth period to erase an 8-6 deficit.

Kollar, who scored a team-high three goals, was named to the first-team all-state team, along with teammates Jake Gavin and Wynn Michael.

Plummer and Lucas Opgenorth were second-team all-state, and Mahkah Wu was honorable mention all-state.

Parkrose defeated Ashland in the girls championship, 16-9.

Smith Freeman had a team-high four goals, Kallie Walker added three and Carlee Santee had 11 saves.

Freeman, Walker and Santee each earned first-team all-state. Teammate Jacy Mairs was second-team all-state, and Sarah Kasiah and Eliana Poole were honorable mention all-state.

MOHAWK 38, BUTTE FALLS 12 — At Marcola, Matt York scored two touchdowns and Dillan Tuyls ran for one touchdown and passed for another as Mohawk rolled in the first-round playoff game.

The Indians blitzed Butte Falls (8-2) for 28 first-quarter points and gained 192 of their 321 rushing yards in the period.

The Loggers trailed 32-6 at halftime.

Butte Falls rushed for 148 yards, with Harley Casillas leading the way with 76 yards on seven carries. Logger quarterback Codey Myers was 9-of-27 passing for 161 yards and two interceptions.

Myers connected with Moe Gower for a 65-yard TD pass in the opening quarter.

The Butte Falls seniors compiled a 30-9 record in the past four years. The Loggers lost just one game in the Mountain Valley League the last three years.

Mohawk advances to the quarterfinals next week against Crane, a 50-34 winner over Wallowa.
