St. Mary's Krieser tops list of District 6 stars

Soccer coaches often covet those special players on opposing teams who simply have a knack for scoring goals.

St. Mary's girls soccer coach Dave Potter admitted that he's felt that way over the years, but now the shoe's on the other foot thanks to the presence of Mackenzie Krieser. The junior forward tallied a remarkable 27 goals this season for the Crusaders, making Potter the envy of his peers and Krieser the easy choice for District 6 player of the year.

"Mackenzie is an impact player," said Potter. "She's one of those special players who take control of the game and make things happen that need to happen to help her team. It's a luxury to have her on our side."

Krieser also contributed nine assists to the Crusaders' cause as St. Mary's won the District 6 title and advanced to the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A semifinals before falling 1-0 to Gladstone on Tuesday.

"She's certainly had an exceptional season and she has created it through hard work and determination," added Potter, whose team finished 15-2-1.

Joining Krieser on the all-league first team were teammates Sarah Seus, Abby Steinsiek and Gina Barbieri.

Also earning first-team recognition were Hidden Valley's Dana Powell, Lindsay Guevara, Rachelle Flick, Charlene Tibbits and Katie Figoni; Henley's Jordin Scholer; North Valley's Megan Knitter; and Cascade Christian's Shayla Hagemeier.

A four-year varsity performer, Seus notched 13 goals and 13 assists despite opting to move back to center midfield to help shore up the flank.

"Sarah is a workhorse," said Potter. "Sarah has a work ethic that is just unbelievable. She will play 100 percent of what she can give, 100 percent of the time."

Steinsiek added seven goals and four assists as a center midfielder, distributing the ball and using her speed to shine as a defender. Barbieri earned 13 shutouts this season and more than deterring shots on goal, Potter said the junior goalkeeper was vital in helping St. Mary's rebuild its attack from the back and control the defense.

The biggest surprise among the first-teamers may have been in who was excluded, with St. Mary's sophomore Anna Thorndike only gaining second-team acclaim despite totaling 18 goals and 15 assists this year for the Crusaders.

"There's not a better second-team player in the nation," added Potter.

As one of essentially 11 players for Cascade Christian, Hagemeier provided considerable leadership for the Challengers.

"She was one of the more vocal defenders that rallied the team and was kind of the instigator of keeping our defense together and keeping it strong and solid," Challengers coach Mick Power said of the junior defender.

For his own efforts, Power was voted coach of the year by his peers after guiding Cascade Christian to a fifth-place showing and 6-9 overall record.

"That was kind of humbling, it really was," Power said of his honor. "I was quite shocked really but at the same time I'm happy for the girls for it, too, because they made my job fairly easy. They knitted together very, very well and it was just a huge team effort with only 11 players."
