Schoener, Chieftains knock off the Knights

ROGUE RIVER — Last season's runner-up in the Sunset League picked up where it left off in a nonconference contest Monday.

Fueled by a 25-point night from Brendan Schoener, the Rogue River boys basketball team dismantled North Valley, 69-56, in its season opener at Rogue River High School.

Schoener hit three of the team's seven 3-pointers and helped get the Chieftains (1-0) get out on fastbreaks as Rogue River coasted into the fourth quarter with a 19-point cushion.

Dustin Krouse added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Chieftains, who finished behind 14-0 Cascade Christian last year with a 10-4 record.

Cole Watson dropped in 12 points and Johnny Garcia contributed eight points and eight rebounds for Rogue River.

Brady Beagley paced the Knights (0-1) with 17 points, Daniel Dean tallied 11 points and Jeremiah Rusk added 10 points and six boards.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 43, NORTH VALLEY 39 — At Merlin, Cascade Christian overcame a 3-point barrage from Natalie Goens to pick up a season-opening nonconference victory.

Goens nailed five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points for the Knights (0-1), but the Challengers' depth was too much for North Valley.

Senior point guard Amber Brown registered 10 points, four steals and three assists for the Challengers (1-0), with Aleena Cesaro adding nine points and 10 rebounds and Amanda Kinney scoring eight points.

Also for Cascade Christian, Katie Aguliar added seven points and eight rebounds and Becca Sellers pulled down seven boards.
