Steel nabs the spotlight for Comets in victory

CENTRAL POINT — Leona Steel went to a basketball camp for point guards in the offseason and, one game into her senior season, the move appears to be paying off.

Steel recorded a career-high 30 points and drilled six 3-pointers to lead Crater to a 78-50 victory Tuesday night against visiting Roseburg.

Although her 3-pointers made were one off the school record, Comets coach JT Thomas was more impressed with Steel's eight assists and no turnovers.

"We've stressed with her ... she's got to learn how to play clean as far as turnovers go; learn how to get her teammates involved in terms of assists," he said. "I would be loving it if she had a game like this every night."

The Comets, who forced 18 turnovers, blew open a 33-26 halftime lead and never looked back.

"Fifty points is not our goal defensively," Thomas said. "We've got a lot of things to work on. We're not crisp by any means.

"First time out, I'm really pleased to come out against a good school and play that well at home."

Crater's Jen Noon added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and teammate Kayla Powell scored 10.

Shelby Snook, who made four 3-pointers, led Roseburg with 16 points.
