North third; Pirates crown two champions

NORTH BEND — North Medford placed third and Phoenix had two individual champions and placed fifth in the 30-team Coast Classic wrestling tournament Saturday.

The rugged two-day tournament is a Who's Who of Oregon prep wrestling.

"It's a tough tournament," said North Medford coach Nolan Harris, "so I'm pleased with the outcome."

Roseburg won with 299 points, followed by Newberg with 196.5, North Medford 139, Redmond 123 and Phoenix 121.

"We haven't placed this high in the Coast Classic in a long time," said Pirates coach John Farmer.

Sophomore Eleazar Deluca of Class 4A Phoenix was particularly impressive at 140 pounds, defeating Sam Mecham of Roseburg for the title, 7-4. Mecham won the 6A state title at 135 last season. The Pirates' Luke Amuchastegui claimed the 160 crown.

North Medford's lone champion was heavyweight Robert Ross, who pinned all but one of his opponents.

Farmer called Deluca one of the most dedicated wrestlers he's had and is glad to see the hard work paying off.

"He was in the lead the whole time and controlled the match," said Farmer. "It was a good match. Sam Mecham is a pretty good wrestler. Eleazar beat a lot of good kids and beat them pretty bad along the way."

Amuchastegui missed out on district and state tournaments last year with a broken ankle. The Stanford-bound wrestler was ranked No. 1 in the state at the time.

Amuchastegui defeated Roseburg's Jay Tovey, 4-0, in the finals here.

"This is his first big tournament win," said Farmer. "I'm glad he had the opportunity to show just how good he is."

Ross pinned Jared Bridgewater in 1:40.

"He (Ross) has been very focused," said Harris. "He was coming out aggressively and was able to fend off the attack of anyone he faced."

Eagle Point's Steven Josephson was the only other local entry in the finals. He lost in the 171 match to Dylan Fors of Roseburg, 7-6.

The Black Tornado had two third-place finishers in Ammon Ebert at 145 and Cory Haggans at 171. Also placing third were Gabe Miller of Illinois Valley at 125 and Trent Kaiser of Eagle Point at 140.
