Helm's 25 points power Phoenix girls

PHOENIX — Encouraged to shoot more, Qiana Helm stole the show as the Phoenix girls basketball team defeated Mazama, 62-40, in nonconference basketball Monday.

The senior forward scored a career-high 25 points.

"It was a breakout night," said Pirates coach Randy Kirkland. "We've been talking about her taking more shots and she did, and it paid off."

Helm was 10-for-21 shooting from the floor and added nine rebounds, six of which were offensive.

The Pirates (3-4) were in control by halftime, 41-29, but they couldn't contain the Pelicans' Mariah Karther-Miller. She hit five 3-pointers and had 17 points by the break. Phoenix keyed on her and shut her out in the second half.

Kelsey George registered 18 points, four assists and three steals for the Pirates, and Chandler Tally scored eight points and grabbed 13 boards as Phoenix dominated on rebounds, 42-26.

GRANTS PASS 35, SPRINGFIELD 30 — At Grants Pass, Grants Pass overcame a bad shooting night with a stout defense that forced 20 steals and yielded just two points to Springfield in the fourth quarter.

The Cavers' Courtney Smith and Heather Wonsyld each had nine points. Smith added four steals and and two blocks, with Wonsyld getting three steals.

NORTH VALLEY 72, ROGUE RIVER 51 — At Merlin, Rogue River erased most of a 12-0 deficit, getting within 31-30 at halftime, but North Valley pulled away in the nonconference game.

The Knights outscored Rogue River 22-2 in the third quarter. Allie Ehrhardt scored 17 and Kelly Maxey 14 for the Chieftains (3-2).

Natalie Goens topped North Valley with 20 and Nicole Goens added 14.

Boys Basketball

PHOENIX 63, CRATER 55 — At Central Point, Crater couldn't climb back after a big second quarter by Phoenix in the nonconference game.

Alex Young poured in 20 points for the Pirates (5-0). Skyler Reagan added 16 and Tyler Dungannon chipped in 10.

The Comets (0-4) had a 14-11 lead heading into the second quarter but were outscored 19-5. They got as close as six in the final frame.

Josh Dalton paced the Comets with 14 points and Thomas Reed pitched in 11.

Taylor Bars led the way for the Mustangs (4-0), who were down 30-26 at halftime, with 15 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals. Cody Krause pulled down 13 rebounds to go with 13 points.

The Mustangs' Todd Woodrum added 13 points and Dylan Armanino tallied 10 points and seven assists.

Wrestling

RED BLUFF HOLIDAY CLASSIC — At Red Bluff, Calif., Crater went 3-1 in dual meets, losing only to eventual champion and host Red Bluff 38-36, in action Saturday.

Tyler Montague won all four of his matches by fall at 119 pounds, and Chase Mackey also went 4-0 at 125 as two of Crater's five freshmen in the lineup. Chance Fahndrich, a sophomore, also earned a pin in all of his matches to go undefeated at 171.
