Kinney's blast sparks Challengers

Amanda Kinney did her job as the cleanup hitter for Cascade Christian in Sunset League softball Friday.

Kinney sparked a five-run rally with a grand slam to help propel the Challengers to a 12-2 five-inning victory against Bandon at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Kinney crushed a pitch over the left-center field fence in the fifth inning to give the Challengers (8-4, 3-0 Sunset) an 8-1 lead.

"(Kinney) came through at the right time," said Cascade Christian coach Jerry Johnson.

Cascade pitcher Jasmine Gomez (8-3) scattered four hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

"Gomez was hitting her spots and mixing it up," said Johnson.

Gomez helped her cause by going 2-for-2 and scored once.

The Challengers broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third inning, capitalizing on four walks and a two-run single by Jordan Martinez.

"I liked that our kids were patient at the plate," said Johnson. "They went with the pitch and didn't try to overswing."
