Black leads Tornado girls past Sheldon

In preparation for Saturday's Crater Classic, the North Medford track and field team opted to rest some of its top competitors in Wednesday's Southwest Conference dual meet with Sheldon at Bowerman Field.

Of those in action, Amber Black set herself apart from the pack with a pair wins as the North Medford girls topped Sheldon, 74-71.

The Sheldon boys edged North, 75-69.

The Black Tornado boys were without stars Drew Jordan and Stetson Smith, among others, and the girls saw limited from standout Baylee Hearns, leading Black Tornado coach Piet Voskes to be more than encouraged by his team's effort.

"I'm very happy with the results considering who we didn't have there," said Voskes. "The Crater Classic takes precedence over a dual. We hope to win it (Crater Classic), that's the objective. We'll be fully loaded — boys and girls."

Jordan and Smith, who hold the state's top times in the 3,000 and 800, respectively, also run the 1,500 for the Black Tornado.

Hearns was limited as she only ran the leading leg on the 4x100 relay and skipped her top two events, the 100 and 200. The 4x100 relay squad, that included Kate Folsom, Sarah Chambers and Samantha Mount, won in 51.43 seconds.

In Hearn's place, freshmen Amanda Murray and Emily Carlson both placed second in the 100 and 200, respectively.

"I was impressed with those two," said Voskes. "Week to week, they just make huge improvements."

Black was the only North Medford competitor to win multiple individual events, securing wins in the 100 (16.41) and 300 (49.44) hurdles events.

For the North boys, David Formolo recorded the top time in the conference in the 200, clocking 23.11, and also teamed with Michael Villers, Erik Larson and Jonathan McUne to win the 4x100 relay in 44.86.

McUne also picked up an individual victory, clocking 15.07 in the 110 hurdles.
