Panthers open SWC softball with victory

EUGENE — South Medford finally got to open the Southwest Conference softball season and did so in dominant fashion, routing South Eugene, 13-1, in five innings Thursday.

Five players had two hits apiece and pitcher Kylee Nunez ran her record to 8-2 on the season.

The Panthers scored three runs in the first inning and nine in the second to take control.

Ashleigh Hawkins' two-run double was the big blow in the first inning.

Nunez and Kelcee Jones made the lead stand up. Nunez went the first three innings, striking out two and allowing four hits. Jones didn't give up a hit in her two innings.

Tasha Equitz and Jordan Jones each were 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in a run for South Medford (8-3), and Samantha Owirka was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Mallory Tacdol and Megan Hobson each added two hits.

The Panthers host Sheldon in a doubleheader today at 2:30 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

ASHLAND 10, HIDDEN VALLEY 5 — At Murphy, Piper Cantrell went 3-for-3 with three runs and three stolen bases and three other Ashland players had two hits in the nonconference win.

Lizzy Scott finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Kaylin McAnany was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs and Rose Marston finished 2-for-5 with three runs and two stolen bases for the Grizzlies (3-11).

Scott hit a two-run double in Ashland's five-run sixth inning.

Winning pitcher Nicole Lehman allowed one earned run, nine hits and one walk and struck out three.

ROGUE RIVER 8, BANDON 2 — At Bandon, Lacey Swangle went 3-for-4 with a triple, Ashley Rabitoy hit a solo home run and Rogue River held Bandon scoreless after the first inning Wednesday.

JoAnne Jessee was 2-for-4 with a double. Pitcher McKenzie Cates struck out eight and allowed six hits and one walk.

Baseball

EAGLE POINT 4, CRATER 2 — At Central Point, Wade McCready limited Crater to three hits and Ben Zomerdyk and Matt Smith were each 3-for-4 with an RBI for Eagle Point in the Southern Sky contest.

McCready's run-scoring double after Zomerdyk and Smith each singled in the third inning provided the eventual winning run.

The Eagles (4-9, 2-3) scored twice in the first on a Zomerdyk single and a sacrifice fly by McCready.

McCready overcame eight walks and stuck out four.

The Comets (5-8, 1-2) scored both runs in the fifth. Andrew Tracy brought in the first with a fielder's choice, then after two passed balls, he scored on an error.

BUTTE FALLS 16, PHOENIX JV 1 — At Butte Falls, sophomore Lehman Adams threw two-hitter and Moe Gower pounded a two-run home run for Butte Falls.

Travis Eller had three hits, and Quinton Weaver, Codey Myers and Gower finished with two hits apiece. Adams, who recorded two hits and three RBIs, struck out five and walked three.
