Comets escape Eagles' upset bid

CENTRAL POINT — Renee Murphy escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning of Game 2 to help Crater complete a sweep of upset-minded Eagle Point in Southern Sky Conference softball Saturday.

Mackenzie Re and Karlie Stephens came through with back-to-back RBI singles to get Eagle Point (5-9, 0-4 SSC) within a run of Crater. With the bases juiced and one out, Murphy struck out the next batter and then fielded a comebacker to clinch a 3-2 victory.

Crater won the first game 5-1 and improved to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Murphy (7-3) picked up the win for the Comets in both games, limiting the Eagles to six hits in a combined 12 innings of work. She also belted an RBI triple in the first inning of Game 1.

Stephens held Crater to four hits in the nightcap, while Chloe Hanson allowed six hits in the opener.

MAZAMA 15-12, ASHLAND 0-0 — At Klamath Falls, Ashland was held scoreless with five total hits in a pair of five-inning Southern Sky Conference losses.

Kenzi Kasper doubled and Darian Grigsby finished 2-for-4 for Mazama (13-1, 4-0 SSC) in the opener. Kaylin McAnany went 2-for-2 for Ashland (3-13, 0-4), which allowed seven earned runs and made three errors in the first inning of the first game. The Vikings connected on four straight singles in the fourth.

Ashland's Nicole Lehman doubled in Game 2.

HENLEY 9-17, HIDDEN VALLEY 4-0 — At Murphy, Brittany Grant paced Henley in the twin bill victory with six hits and six RBIs.

In Game 1, sophomore Jessica Guirlani collected two hits and one RBI for winless Hidden Valley (0-9, 0-2 Skyline).

Henley pitcher Rylee Carlton surrendered a bunt single in the first inning for the Mustangs' only hit in the second game. Carleton helped her cause with three hits and two RBIs and Adrienne Pace contributed four hits and three RBIs for the Hornets (9-5, 2-1 Skyline).

BUTTE FALLS 7-2, LOST RIVER 2-9 — At Merrill, Butte Falls' Mariah Moore allowed just three hits and had eight strikeouts in seven innings to pick up the win in the first game.

Aarika Stephens led the the Loggers' offense with three doubles and three RBIs while going 3-for-4 at the plate.

In the nightcap the bats stalled out for Butte Falls (6-5, 4-2 Dist. 4) and Lost River was able to pull away for the win.

Nonconference

GOLD BEACH 5-4, NORTH VALLEY 0-10 — At Merlin, North Valley found its offense in the second game of a nonconference split with Gold Beach (7-4) at North Valley High.

Katie Dellsite hit a run-scoring triple in the third inning and finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs in Game 2. The Knights recorded five hits and eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away. Shelby Stevens was 3-for-4 with a run, Kendra Peckham had a hit and two runs and Jasmine Aaron singled twice for North Valley (3-10).

In the opener, Aaron thew a five-hitter, Cami Million doubled twice and Savannah Drew had two singles.
