St. Mary's golfers take it low in District 6

KLAMATH FALLS — Defending state champion St. Mary's put on a stellar performance in winning a District 6 girls golf tournament at Running Y Ranch Resort Tuesday.

Aubrie Street and Cassandra Carothers shared medalist honors with 5-over-par 77s, and four players on the five-person team shot career-low rounds. Only the best four scores count toward the team total.

St. Mary's won with a score of 334, only two shots off the school record despite cold weather that was at times windy and rainy. Runner-up Henley registered a 372.

Street and teammate Katie Wayman each recorded eagles.

Street turned in a 1-under 35 on the front nine, eagling the par-5 second hole when she was on in two, then sank a 35-foot putt.

Wayman's first-ever eagle also came on No. 2 and helped her to a career-low 84. She recovered from a poor drive by holing out her third shot from 150 yards with a 5-iron.

Carothers, who shot a 37 on the back nine, tied her best round. Jordan Jackson's 96 was a personal best, as was No. 5 player Katie Traister's 108.

District 5 Baseball

ST. MARY'S 12, PROSPECT 4 — Brad Herrmann, who has battled recent illiness and pitched five innings Saturday in a win over North Lake, came on strong again to lead St. Mary's in the District 5 game at U.S. Cellular.

Herrmann struck out 13 over the final six innings, allowing one hit. Added to his effort Saturday, when the senior left-hander fanned 11, he has 24 strikeouts in his last 11 innings.

Soggy conditions brought on by a light but constant rain contributed to six walks by Herrmann.

Connor O'Boyle staked the Crusaders (5-6, 4-2 Dist. 5) to an early lead when he deposited an 0-2 pitch over the left-field fence for his first home run of the season to lead off the first inning. O'Boyle was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

Andrew King and Cooper Sherwin each drove in a pair of runs for St. Mary's.

Prospect (1-13, 0-6) tied the game with a four-run third, highlighted by Jordan Rock's two-run double. The Cougars, who are making their return to baseball after a 14-year absence, managed four first-inning hits off freshman Jacob Wall.

Hass struck out 10 and walked two to improve to 5-4 for the Crusaders (6-5, 4-1 Dist. 4).

Liz Pentland had two hits — including a double — and three RBIs for St. Mary's, which used 12 fourth-inning runs to take control.

Kristen Reynolds' single broke up Hass' no-hit bid in the fourth inning for Prospect (1-8, 0-5).
